From her earliest years she displayed an ardent desire to save souls, together with such wisdom and recollection that she was later called “the woman who was never a child.” Yet the path she had to follow was long and thorny. Having entered the Benedictine monastery of St Gratus, she left after six months because of epilepsy; she re-entered, but after nineteen months was again dismissed by order of her director; the third time she was recalled, on the eve of her profession, by the bishop and her director together.
At this point (8 February 1831) he ordered her to take charge of a school at once and to begin without delay the new Institute which he had long envisaged; to gather young women who wished to follow her example, to test and draw up the rules of the new Congregation, which would be called the “Society of the Daughters of the Sacred Heart.” She carried out his instructions to the letter, and God blessed her work by increasing the number of vocations and the variety of houses: boarding schools, schools, refuges, and boarding establishments. She was beatified on 26 May 1946.
