KRÜDENER, BARBARA JULIANA von. - Political woman, religious preacher and writer, b. in Riga on 21 Nov. 1764 and d. at Karasubazar in the Crimea on 24 Dec. 1824. Having turned to a mystical Pietism in 1804, under the influence of the doctrine of the "Moravian Brethren" and of the writings of Zinzendorf, she later allowed herself to be drawn into the Swedenborgian current of J. H. Jung-Schilling, of the pastor F. Fontaine and of the visionary Maria Gottlieb Kummer, who made of her a visionary, so that, believing herself called to preach a new religion in Europe, she began by condemning, without exception, all the Christian confessions of the time.
Received at Heilbronn in 1815 by the Emperor Alexander I, she succeeded in gaining great ascendancy over him, so that the supposition that it was K. who induced the Tsar to conclude the "Holy Alliance" against Napoleon cannot seem entirely unfounded. The field of her prophetic preaching was Germany and Switzerland, but from there she was expelled in 1817; having returned to Germany, she was again banished the following year, and went to take refuge, as the guest of the Prince of Galitzin, in the Crimea, where she died. Of her there remain some poetical compositions, an autobiographical novel (Valérie, 1803), of a Wertherian flavor, and a small writing of exalted inspiration (Camp de vertus), published posthumously in 1841.
