WISSOWA, GEORG. - Classical philologist, b. in Breslau on 11 June 1859, d. in Halle on 13 May 1931. In 1882 he was a Privatdozent in Breslau; in 1895 full professor in Halle.
He devoted himself especially to the study of Roman religion, to which he dedicated a volume in Jwan Müller's Handbuch: Religion und Kultus der Römer (Munich 1902, 2nd ed. 1912), unsurpassed to this day. He edited the new edition of the third part of the Röm. Staatsverwaltung, devoted to the sacred antiquities of the Romans by J. Marquardt. He began the new, completely transformed and enlarged edition of Pauly's Realencyclopädie, still in the course of publication, and enriched with supplements. He also edited the 9th and 10th editions of Friedländer's Sittengeschichte Roms (4 vols., 1919-23). His Gesammelte Abhandlungen zur röm. Religionsund Stadtgeschichte (1904) contain a valuable collection of studies and research on the subject.
