WISSOWA, GEORG. - Classical philologist, b. at Breslau on 11 June 1859, d. at Halle on 13 May 1931. In 1882 he became Privatdozent at Breslau; in 1895 full professor at Halle.
He devoted himself especially to the study of Roman religion, to which he dedicated a volume in the Hendbuch of Jwan Müller: Religion und Kultus der Römer (Munich 1902, 2nd ed. 1912), unsurpassed to this day. He edited the new edition of the third part of the Röm. Staatverwaltung, devoted to the sacred antiquities of the Romans by J. Marquardt. He began the new, completely revised and enlarged edition of Pauly’s Realencyclopädie, still in the course of publication and enriched with supplements. He also edited the 9th and 10th editions of Friedländer’s Sittengeschichte Roms (4 vols., 1919–23). His Gesammelte Abhandlungen zur röm. Religions- und Stadtgeschichte (1904) contain a valuable collection of studies and research on the subject.
