Woods, Julian Edmund Tenison

WOODS, JULIAN EDMUND TENISON. - Naturalist, b. 15 Nov. 1832 at Southwark, d. 7 Oct. 1889 at Sydney.

Having converted to Catholicism, he entered the Passionists. In 1854 he went to Australia, where he was ordained a priest two years later and carried on intense missionary activity in South Australia for two decades. Vicar general of the bishop of Adelaide in 1867, he returned to missionary work in 1873 in Queensland and Tasmania. He studied with passion the natural history, geology and paleontology of the newest continent and published a great many contributions on these subjects. He also wrote a history of the explorations in Australia (History of the discovery and exploration of Australia, 2 vols., London 1865) and a work on the ichthyology of New South Wales (Fish and Fisheries of New South Wales), published posthumously in 1892.
