WOODS, JULIAN EDMUND TENISON. - Naturalist, b. 15 Nov. 1832 at Southwark, d. 7 Oct. 1889 at Sydney.
Having converted to Catholicism, he entered the Passionists. In 1854 he went to Australia, where he was ordained priest two years later and for two decades carried out intense missionary work in southern Australia. In 1867 he became vicar general to the bishop of Adelaide, but in 1873 returned to missionary work in Queensland and Tasmania. He studied with passion the natural history, geology and paleontology of the new continent and published numerous contributions on these subjects. He also wrote a history of exploration in Australia (*History of the discovery and exploration of Australia*, 2 vols., London 1865) and a work on the fish of New South Wales (*Fish and Fisheries of New South Wales*), published posthumously in 1892.
