Zimmermann, Otto

ZIMMERMANN, OTTO. - Theologian and ascetical writer, b. 24 May 1873 at Döttingen (Switzerland), d. 13 Jan. 1932 at Lucerne.

Having entered the Society of Jesus (1890), he was for many years a contributor to the journal Stimmen der Zeit and a spiritual father. Among his best-known writings are Ohne Grenzen und Enden (Freiburg im Br. 1910, 5th ed. 1923); Das Gottesbedürfnis (ibid. 1910); Warum Schuld und Schmerz? (3rd ed. ibid. 1924); Vom Vielen zum Einen (ibid. 1921). His fundamental work was a textbook of ascetics, Lehrbuch der Aszetik (2nd ed. ibid. 1932), which for a long time held primacy among those written in the German language, notable for its wealth of bibliography, its order, its balance of judgment, and its breadth of treatment.
