ZIMMERMANN, OTTO. - Theologian and ascetical writer, b. May 24, 1873, at Döttingen (Switzerland), d. Jan. 13, 1932, at Lucerne.
He entered the Society of Jesus in 1890 and for many years was a contributor to the review *Stimmen der Zeit* and served as a spiritual director. Among his best-known works are *Ohne Grenzen und Enden* (Freiburg in Br. 1910, 5th ed. 1923); *Das Gottesbedürfnis* (ibid. 1910); *Warum Schuld und Schmerz?* (3rd ed. 1924); *Vom Vielen zum Einen* (ibid. 1921). His principal work was a textbook of ascetical theology, *Lehrbuch der Ascetik* (2nd ed. ibid. 1932), which for a long time held first place among works written in the German language, notable for its wealth of bibliography, orderly arrangement, balanced judgments, and comprehensive treatment.
