Its purpose at first (1925–47) was to serve the scientific study of asceticism and mysticism, both theoretical and historical, with the collaboration of eminent writers, not only from the Jesuit Order but also from the secular and regular clergy. From 1947, after a three-year interruption caused by the war, it emphasized its formative orientation, intending to promote spiritual life especially among educated persons, by having them study above all those problems of asceticism and mysticism that are of greatest interest to contemporary society. It then took the name Geist und Leben, retaining the former title as a subtitle.
It also admitted lay persons among its writers. It was initially directed by A. Ersin (1925) at Innsbruck; subsequently by F. Bleinstein at Dillingen-Donau, with the collaboration of F. Wulf at Monaco di Baviera (1929–51). Among its well-known writers are P. Lippert, E. Dorsch, R. Richstaetter, P. de Chasronay, O. ZIMMERMANN, OTTO (v.), A. Merk, E. Raitz V. Frentz, F. Hatheyer, A.
