ZINGARELLI, NICOLA ANTONIO. - Musician, born in Napoli on 4 April 1752, died in Torre del Greco on 5 May 1837.
He studied at the Conservatorio di S. Maria di Loreto in Napoli; at the age of twenty he was chapel master at Torre Annunziata (1772), in 1792 at the cathedral of Milano, in 1794 at the S. Casa di Loreto, and in 1804 at S. Pietro in Roma, where he remained until 1811. Taken prisoner by Napoleone for having refused to conduct a Te Deum for the birth of the «Re di Roma», then released and rewarded for having set a mass to music in Parigi, he returned to direct the Reale Collegio di musica in Napoli (1813), and in 1816 was appointed chapel master of the Cathedral there, succeeding Paisiello. Besides many operas, his sacred output is noteworthy: three oratorios, La distruzione di Gerusalemme (Firenze 1803), La riedificazione di Gerusalemme (Napoli 1804), Saulle, ovvero il Trionfo di Davide (ibid. 1805); several religious cantatas, masses, Requiems, Stabat Mater, Magnificats, hymns, motets, etc. Famous is the four-part Miserere, written in 1826.
