ZINGARELLI, NICOLA ANTONIO. - Musician, b. in Naples on 4 April 1752, d. at Torre del Greco on 5 May 1837.
He studied at the Conservatory of S. Maria di Loreto in Naples; at the age of 20 he was maestro di cappella at Torre Annunziata (1772), in 1792 he held that post at the cathedral of Milan, in 1794 at the S. Casa of Loreto and in 1804 at St. Peter's in Rome, where he remained until 1811. Taken prisoner by Napoleon for having refused to conduct a Te Deum for the birth of the "King of Rome," then freed and remunerated for having set a mass to music in Paris, he returned to direct the Royal College of Music in Naples (1813) and in 1816 was appointed there maestro di cappella of the Cathedral, succeeding Paisiello. Besides many operas, his sacred output is notable: 3 oratorios: La distruzione di Gerusalemme (Florence 1803), La riedificazione di Gerusalemme (Naples 1804), Saulle, ovvero il Trionfo di Davide (ibid. 1805); several sacred cantatas, masses, Requiem, Stabat Mater, Magnificat, hymns, motets, etc. Famous is the Miserere for 4 voices, written in 1826.
