ZINGARELLI, NICOLA ANTONIO. — Musician, born in Naples on 4 April 1752, died in Torre del Greco on 5 May 1837.
He studied at the Conservatory of S. Maria di Loreto in Naples; at the age of 20 he was maestro di cappella in Torre Annunziata (1772), in 1792 he held the same position in the cathedral of Milan, in 1794 in the Holy House of Loreto, and in 1804 in St Peter’s in Rome, where he remained until 1811. Taken prisoner by Napoleon for refusing to conduct a *Deum* for the birth of the King of Rome, he was later released and remunerated for having composed a mass in Paris. He returned to direct the Royal College of Music in Naples (1813) and in 1816 was appointed maestro di cappella of the Cathedral there, succeeding Paisiello. In addition to many operas, his religious output is notable: 3 oratorios: *La distruzione di Gerusalemme* (Florence 1803), *La riedificazione di Gerusalemme* (Naples 1804), *Saul, ovvero il Trionfo di Davide* (ibid. 1805); several sacred cantatas, masses, a *Requiem*, *Stabat Mater*, *Magnificat*, hymns, motets, etc. Famous is the *Miserere* for 4 voices, written in 1826.
