WILLAERT, ADRIEN. - Composer, b. in Flanders (at Bruges or Roulers) between 1480 and 1490, d. in Venice on 7 Dec. 1562.
After a brief stay at the court of Ladislaus II of Bohemia and Hungary, he is found, in 1527, directing the musical chapel of St. Mark's, in Venice, where he remained for fully 36 years, until his death.
To him is traced that glorious Venetian school of polyphony which was to give art the coloristic richness of harmonic chromaticism, set against the plastic dialogic power of the 2 vocal choirs and the 2 organs. The practice of the double choir is in fact skillfully applied by him, especially in the Psalms belonging to the Vesperi da cantarsi a uno o duoi chori (Venice 1550); but before these W. had printed (1536) the Liber quinque missarum with 5 masses for 4 voices, and the various collections of motets and hymns also for 4 voices, which appeared at various times together with the numerous secular and instrumental vocal works ("Ricercari" for organ, etc.).
