CAVAZZONI. - Two figures of this family are remembered: MARCO ANTONIO, also called Antonio da Bologna, was a pupil and singer of the celebrated school of singing maintained by A. Willaert at S. Marco in Venice; he was greatly esteemed by the master, who mentions him in his will. GIROLAMO (b. about 1500, d. 1560), called d'Urbino, son of the former and, together with him, in the service of Card. Bembo, whose godson he was. He is one of the most interesting figures among sixteenth-century organist-composers, also eminent as a teacher, being the organ instructor of the distinguished Brescia organ builder Costanzo Antegnati.
He is the author of a valuable collection of organ pieces entitled Intavolatura d'organo, cioè Ricercari, Canzoni, Hinn, Magnificat (2 vols., Venice, 1542 and 1543), a work from which various pieces have been extracted for publication in modern collections: by L. Torchi in vol. III of his Arte musicale in Italia (Milan, 1897), and by G. Benvenuti in the Classici della musica italiana of the Milan Institute, nos. 23–24. Luisa Cervelli
