CAVAZZONI. — Two members of this family are recorded: Marco Antonio, also known as Antonio da Bologna, was a pupil and singer at the famous singing school directed by A. Willaert in S. Marco, Venice, and was highly esteemed by his master, who mentions him in his will. Girolamo (b. c. 1500, d. 1560), called d’Urbino, son of the former and in his service with Cardinal Bembo, of whom he was a godson. He is one of the most interesting figures among 16th-century organist-composers, distinguished also as a teacher, serving as organ master for the celebrated Cestiano Antegnati organ in Brescia.
He is the author of a noteworthy collection of organ pieces titled Intavolatura d’organo, cioè Ricercari, Canzoni, Himni, Magnificat (2 vols., Venice 1542 and 1543), from which various pieces have been excerpted for modern editions: by L. Torchi in vol. III of his Arte musicale in Italia (Milan 1897) and by G. Benvenuti in Classici della musica italiana of the Istituto di Milano, pp. 23–24.
