ZOBOR. - Monastic center of Slovakia, on the mountain of the same name, near Nitra.

Over the course of the centuries, monastic life on the Z. marks three periods: in the first it would have been founded, according to the ancient tradition of which Cosmas of Prague speaks in his Chronica, the Benedictine abbey of St. Hippolytus at Z., in the 9th century, in the era of Great Moravia, ca. the year 880. However, the first historical records date from ca. the year 1000, at the time of Sts. Andrew Svorad (Zoerardus) and Benedict, martyred in 1012 at Skalka. The abbey flourished until 1468, when it was occupied by the bishopric of Nitra and the monks were dispersed. The second period began in 1691, when the bishop began to restore the dilapidated abbey and transformed it into a Camaldolese hermitage. The monks dwelt there until 1782, the year in which they were suppressed by Joseph II. The third period began in 1936, when the bishop of Nitra, K. Kmetko (v.), rebuilt the monastery and handed it over for the novitiate to the Missionaries of the Divine Word, who added a house for retreats. In 1950 religious life at Z. was again cut short, with the imprisonment of the religious by the communist government.
