KMETKO, KAROL. — Archbishop, born 12 December 1875 in Dolné Držkovce, died 22 December 1948 in Nitra (Slovakia). Ordained a priest in 1899, he became a doctor of theology in 1906, and then parish priest at Teplička near Žilina, and a deputy in the Parliament of Prague. In 1920 he was elected bishop of Nitra, and in 1944 appointed archbishop ad personam. He devoted himself particularly to promoting, supporting, and spreading the work of foreign missions. He left a study in scientific missiology: Svetové misie («World Missions», 2 vols., Nitra 1942).
