JASOV (Hungarian Jászó). - Premonstratensian abbey in Slovakia.
It was founded around 1220, and is today the only survivor of the several Premonstratensian abbeys in Slovakia. The present building is a monument of Baroque art, built by A. Pilgram in the years 1765-66. It is a square, with the church in the center. It possesses a valuable library.
In the time of its flourishing, until after the First World War, several colleges (Cassovia, Rosnavia, Gran Varadino, Gödöllő) and parishes depended on this monastery. On June 7, 1922 the Holy See erected J. into an abbey nullius with 10 parishes. However, this apostolic constitution was not executed, due to the opposition of the Czechoslovak government. In 1949, besides the central monastery, the abbey had 2 convents (Cassovia, Lele) and administered 8 parishes. After the First World War it lost a great part of its possessions, and after the Second almost everything was confiscated. Indeed, in the monastery itself a school of agriculture was installed by the current government. In the present persecution of the Church in Czechoslovakia the abbey of J. was designated, along with two other monasteries, to be the "concentration monastery" for religious, and on Apr. 14, 1950 the Premonstratensians, the Jesuits and other religious of Slovakia gathered there.
