KNABENBAUER, JOSEF. - Exegete, b. 19 March 1839 at Deggendorf (Bavaria), d. 12 Nov. 1911 at Maastricht. On 27 Sept. 1857 he entered the Society of Jesus.
Ordained priest in 1871, he taught exegesis and Oriental languages at Ditton Hall and Valkenburg, and edited the periodicals Katholische Missionen and Stimmen aus Maria Laach. His works (all published in the Cursus Scripturae Sacrae collection, Paris) are extensive commentaries on biblical books: Iob (1886); Prophetae minores (1886, 2nd ed. edited by M. Hagen 1924); Isaías (2 vols., 1887, 2nd ed. revised by Fr. Zorell 1922; this commentary had appeared in German in 1881); Ieremias (1889); Ezechiel (1890); Daniel; Lamentationes; Baruch (1891, 2nd ed. revised by J. Linder 1939); Ecclesiastes (1902); III Machales (1907). His New Testament commentaries are especially praised: Marcus (1894, 2nd ed. 1907, reprinted 1928); Actus Ap. (1899); Matthaeus (2nd ed. 1903, 3rd ed. edited by A. Merli 1922); Lucas (2nd ed. 1905); Ioannes (1898, 2nd ed. 1905, reprinted 1928); Epistolae ad Ephes. Philip. Coloss. (1912); Epistolae ad Thessalonicenses; Epistolae Pastorales (1913).
He also published a large number of exegetical studies both in Stimmen aus Maria Laach and in the Lexicon biblicum of M. Hagen (3 vols., Paris 1905-11).
