KNABENBAUER, Josef. - Exegete, born 19 March 1839 at Deggendorf (Bavaria), died 12 November 1911 at Maastricht. On 27 September 1857 he entered the Society of Jesus.
Ordained priest in 1871, he taught exegesis and Oriental languages at Ditton Hall and Valkenburg, and directed the periodicals *Katholische Missionen* and *Stimmen aus Maria Laach*. His works (all published in the series *Cursus Scripturae Sacrae*, Paris) are extensive commentaries on biblical books: *Job* (1886); *Prophetae minores* (1886, 2nd ed. ed. M. Hagen 1924); *Isaias* (2 vols., 1887, 2nd ed. rev. Fr. Zorell 1922; this commentary had appeared in German in 1881); *Ieremia* (1889); *Ezechiel* (1890); *Daniel*; *Lamentationes*; *Baruch* (1891, 2nd ed. rev. J. Linder 1939); *Ecclesiastes* (1902); *III Machabei* (1907). His commentaries on the New Testament are especially noteworthy: *Marcus* (1894, 2nd ed. 1907, reprint 1928); *Actus Ap.* (1899); *Matthaeus* (2nd ed. 1903, 3rd ed. ed. A. Merk 1922); *Lucas* (2nd ed. 1905); *Ioannes* (1898, 2nd ed. 1905, reprint 1928); *Epistolae ad Ephes. Philip. Coloss.* (1912); *Epistolae ad Thessalonicienses*; *Epistolae Pastorales* (1913).
He also published numerous exegetical studies in *Stimmen aus Maria Laach* and in M. Hagen’s *Lexicon biblicum* (3 vols., Paris 1905–11).
