HAGEN, MARTIN. - Jesuit, exegete, brother of the astronomer Johannes Georg, b. at Bregenz (Austria) on 23 May 1855, d. at Valkenburg (Holland) on 12 July 1923. Professor of Hebrew and Sacred Scripture, first at Ditton Hall (1891–95), then at Valkenburg (1895–1907), and finally writer and collaborator on the Cursus Scripturae Sacrae, founded and directed by Fr. R. Cornely.
His principal works belong, in fact, to the Cursus: Lexicon biblicum (3 vols., Paris 1905–11); Atlas biblicus (ibid. 1907); the revised and completed 6th, 7th, and 8th editions of Fr. Cornely’s Compendium introductionis historicae et criticae in utriusque Testamenti sacros libros (ibid. 1909, 1911, 1914), and the complementary volume: Realia biblica geographica, naturalia, archaeologica (ibid. 1914); the revised and completed 2nd edition of Fr. J. Knabenbauer’s Commentarius in Prophetas minores (2 vols., ibid. 1924). To his exegetical works H. also wished to add several ascetical works, the fruit of his spiritual ministries: Das Herz Jesu, die Gnadenwonne an der Wende des Jahrhunderts (Kevelaer 1899; Italian trans. Vicenza 1901); Die göttlichen Tugenden (ibid. 1909); Die sittlichen Tugenden (ibid. 1910).
