KORTLEITNER, FRANZ NAVER. - In the world Josef, exegete, b. at Bressanone on 21 Jan. 1863, d. at Innsbruck on 2 Oct. 1939. He entered the Order of the Premonstratensians at Wilten (Innsbruck) in 1881; a priest in 1885, in 1888 he became professor of Sacred Scripture and in 1935 he was appointed consultor of the Pontifical Biblical Commission.

The most important of the works that K. indefatigably published over the long decades of his studies are: Archaeologia biblica (Innsbruck 1907, 2nd ed. greatly enlarged 1917); Hermeneutica biblica (ibid. 1923). With the 15 volumes of his collection Commentationes biblicae, K. produced useful and learned monographs on the Old Testament, among them: Formae cultus Mosaici (Innsbruck 1917; 3rd ed. 1939); Israelitarum in Aegypto commoratio (ibid. 1930).

All of K.'s writings excel in solidity of doctrine, clear arrangement, and careful style; they open the way for all those who aspire to a sound biblical erudition.
