KORTLEITNER, FRANZ NAVER. - Born Josef, exegete, b. at Bressanone on 21 Jan. 1863, d. at Innsbruck on 2 Oct. 1939. He entered the Order of Premonstratensians at Wilten (Innsbruck) in 1881; ordained priest in 1885, he became professor of Sacred Scripture in 1888, and in 1935 was appointed consultor to the Pontifical Biblical Commission.
The most important among the works which K. tirelessly published during the long decades of his studies are: Archaeologia biblica (Innsbruck 1907, 2nd greatly enlarged ed. 1917); Hermeneutica biblica (ibid. 1923). With the 15 volumes of his collection Commentationes biblicae, K. provided useful and learned monographs on the Old Testament, including: Formae cultus Mosaici (Innsbruck 1917; 3rd ed. 1939); Israelitarum in Aegypto commoratio (ibid. 1930).
All K.’s writings excel in solidity of doctrine, clear arrangement, and careful style; they open the way for all who aspire to sound biblical learning.
