ZVIZDOVIĆ, ANGELO. - Franciscan missionary, born at Vrhbosna, near present-day Serajevo in Bosnia, in 1420, into a noble schismatic family which he himself, after the conversion brought about by the preaching of s. Giacomo della Marca, succeeded in leading into the bosom of Catholicism.
A great preacher, he converted many Patarine heretics and many schismatics to the Catholic faith. In 1463, at the fall of the Kingdom of Bosnia, he had the courage to present himself to the Turkish conqueror, Maometto II, and obtained from him the “Ahd-name,” that is, the high diploma of tolerance and protection for the Friars Minor and for the Catholic people entrusted to them. Thanks to this privilege, the Franciscans succeeded in preserving Catholicism in occupied Croatia and in evangelizing the other Balkan peoples subject to the Turks. Z. died ca. 1498, and the fame of his holiness still endures among the people.
