ZVIZDOVIĆ, ANGELO. - Franciscan missionary, b. at Vrhbosna, in the vicinity of present-day Sarajevo in Bosnia, in 1420, into a noble schismatic family which he himself, after his conversion following the preaching of St. James of the March, succeeded in bringing into the bosom of Catholicism.

A great preacher, he converted to the Catholic faith many Patarine heretics and many schismatics. In 1463, at the fall of the Kingdom of Bosnia, he had the courage to present himself before the Turkish conqueror, Mehmed II, and from him obtained the "Ahd-name," that is, the high diploma of tolerance and protection for the Friars Minor and for the Catholic people entrusted to them. Thanks to this privilege the Franciscans succeeded in preserving Catholicism in occupied Croatia, and in evangelizing the other Balkan peoples subject to the Turks. Z. died ca. 1498 and the fame of his holiness still endures among the people.
