PATARINI. – In common usage, from the 12th century onward this was the name given in Italy to those heretics who, rebelling against ecclesiastical authority, inclined to a greater or lesser degree toward the errors of the Cathars-Albigensians (v.) and related sects, and were therefore included in papal and imperial condemnations; they must consequently be distinguished from Pataria (v.).
