PATARINI

PATARINES. - In common usage, from the 12th century this was the name given in Italy to those heretics who, rebellious against ecclesiastical authority, leaned more or less toward the errors of the Cathars-Albigensians (v.) and related sects, and were therefore included in the papal and imperial proscriptions; they must thus be distinguished from the adherents of the earlier Pataria (v.).
