Ausculta fili

Bull 'Ausculta fili' to King Philip IV of France

Bull of Pope Boniface VIII ·

1 Concerning the excesses committed by the King of France and concerning nuncios to be sent by him to Rome on the first of November, at the time when the prelates of the kingdom of France shall there consult with the Pope concerning the same matters.1

2 To our most beloved son in Christ Philip, illustrious King of France. Hear, most beloved son, the precepts of a father and the instruction of a master, who shall bear His place on earth—He who alone is master and lord—incline the ear of thy heart, and willingly receive the compassionate admonition of holy Mother Church and take care to fulfill it effectively2 that with a contrite heart thou mayest return reverently to God, from whom, through sloth or depraved counsel, thou art known to have departed, and that thou mayest devoutly conform thyself to His and our good pleasure. To thee therefore our discourse is directed, to thee paternal love is expressed, and the sweet breasts of a mother are laid bare. For thou, reborn in the sacred font of baptism, renouncing the devil and his pomps, hast entered the field of human warfare and mortality, not as a stranger and sojourner, but already made a member of the household of faith and a citizen of the saints, thou hast entered the Lord's fold, outside which no one is saved, namely the Catholic Church, one3 dove, immaculate spouse of the one Christ, in which the Roman Pontiff, the successor of Peter, is known to hold the primacy, who, with the keys of the kingdom of heaven committed to him, is recognized by God as judge of the living and the dead, to whom, sitting upon the throne of judgment, it pertains by his gaze to disperse all evil. Of this spouse indeed4 which descended from heaven, prepared by God as a bride adorned for her husband, the Roman Pontiff is the head. Nor does she have more heads

Notes

  1. A cross is marked in the margin written in black ink. This letter is not read in its entirety in the register; many sentences of the same were erased by order of Pope Clement V, as was mandated in the inscription: « Let it be corrected according to the note » which is still legible, although attempts to erase it are evident, in the margin at the nineteenth line, and as is clear from the protocol, of which we have already made mention and which this inscription in the margin, written in the seventeenth or eighteenth century, commemorates: « The page below 140 states that these erasures were made by order of Clement, Pope V. ». The erased sentences are printed in italic characters. We publish the letter from the edited text, collated with the register in the parts preserved there and with the text preserved in a copy of the process against Boniface VIII which is preserved in the Vatican archive X, 193, p. 303.

2 Charissimo in Christo filio Philippo, regi Francie illustri. Hujus profecto sponce4 que de coelo descendit, a Deo parata sicut sponsa ornata viro suo, Romanus Pontifex capud existit. Nec habet plura capita
