Bull on the obligation of Easter Communion

Bull of Pope Eugene IV ·

1 the Pope is said to have declared upon this matter. — 2. He gives another declaration. — 3. He commands that these be made known.

2 Eugene, Pope IV, to his beloved son James of Primaticis of Bologna, of the Order of Friars Minor of the Regular Observance.

3 We have learned by trustworthy report that in the course of these times, no small commotion has been stirred up concerning a declaration about the proper reception of the most sacred Body of our Lord Jesus Christ, and it has been affirmed by certain religious that those not actually communicating on the day of the Lord's Resurrection would sin mortally, even if they had communicated many times and frequently on Holy Thursday and on any other days whatsoever throughout the year, which it is troublesome for pious ears to hear.

4 § 1. We recall that we wrote by a certain Brief of ours to our venerable brother the Bishop of Lodi, that we understood it to be satisfied if someone communicate a little before or a little after the day of the Lord's Resurrection; we marveled that afterward a new controversy revived; but the enemy man has oversown tares.

5 § 2. We therefore, desiring to gather the pure wheat into the Lord's barn, and to put an end to useless contentions, considering, according to the doctrine of blessed Augustine, that the circumstances of Scripture are wont to illuminate the substance of truth, and not only adjacent words but also preceding and following words are to be considered prudently, since the canon says Ec-1

6 He gives another declaration.

7 Art. C. 1441 of the Church, All of either sex of the faithful shall confess at least once a year; and further Receiving at least at Easter reverently the sacrament of the Eucharist; and it follows Unless by the counsel of their own priest, for some reasonable cause, they should have decided to abstain from its reception for a time; we say expressly that it was not the intention of the legislator to ensnare the souls of the faithful under the guilt of mortal sin to communicate precisely on the day of the Lord's Resurrection, but to have set a term from Easter to Easter; since he says once a year, and further at least at Easter, etc. For the meaning, rather than the sound of words, is to be attended to discreetly. We understand therefore with the best right that the canon is satisfied if in Holy Week or within the octave of Easter of the Lord's Resurrection, according to the better disposition of conscience and the more apt devotion of mind, the faithful, with due preparation, receive the holy pledge of the Eucharist and celebrate Easter with the Lord unto salvation, and we will that all acquiesce in this judgment.

8 § 3. Wherefore we commit to your devotion that you make known the aforesaid, where it shall be needful, to the people.

9 Given at Rome at St. Peter's, under our secret seal, on the 8th day of July in the year 1440, in the tenth year of our pontificate. Dat. 8 July 1440, pontif. year x.

1 su questo si è dichiarato il Papa. — 2. Dà un'altra dichiarazione. — 3.
