Bull reducing the Jubilee year to a 25-year interval

Bull of Pope Sixtus IV ·

year V.
CAP. IV.
Bull of confirmation of the jubilee year, published at the Basilica of St. Peter on the day of the Nativity of the Lord, in which it is contained that the jubilee year has been reduced to a shorter period than it was formerly: since in every twenty-fifth year also to all the faithful visiting the basilicas of the City of Rome, here expressed, that indulgence shall be granted. And, while that lasts, other indulgences cease everywhere.

1 § 1 Sixtus IV. (in the year 1473.) Just as the diligent care and watchfulness of a shepherd preserves the sheep entrusted to his custody from the attacks of wild beasts, and leads them to a prosperous state with multiplied offspring; so also we, to whom by divine disposition the solicitude for the entire flock of the Lord has been committed, both desire with supreme affection and strive with unceasing efforts to reconcile all the faithful of Christ, whom the diabolical fraud of the enemy of mankind turns away from justice, to their Author, having laid aside the burden of sins: so that they may obtain the rewards of eternal happiness through the inestimable charity of our Redeemer, and through the ministry of our work, public utility urging it on, even through the reception of graces, that which is fitting for their salvation may be accomplished, and the salutary ordinances of us and our predecessors may be brought to their due effect. Long ago, indeed, when the most blessed Pope Paul, our predecessor of happy memory, induced by reasonable causes then expressed, by the counsel of our venerable brothers, then his, (of whose number we then were,) providently moderating the jubilee year to a shorter period, restricted it by apostolic authority to the year of twenty-five. And he willed, established, and decreed from the aforesaid causes, that in every twenty-five years the aforesaid jubilee year should be celebrated, and that in the year of our Lord one thousand four hundred seventy-four, namely from the vigil of the nativity of our Lord Jesus Christ, the same jubilee year should begin, and, as follows, should end, and that all and each of the faithful of either sex, who should devoutly visit the basilicas of the blessed Apostles Peter and Paul, the Lateran church also and the church of holy Mary Major of the same venerable city on the appointed days, should obtain all and singular the indulgences and remissions of sins which the same pontiff and his predecessors had devoutly granted to those visiting these basilicas and churches in such a jubilee year, through certain letters first, and then we, who, the aforesaid predecessor being removed from the midst, as it pleased the Lord, by divine providence were assumed to the summit of the supreme apostolate, and through other our letters, approving the ordinance, will, and statute of the same Paul our predecessor, and all and singular things contained in the same his letters, by the counsel of the same brothers, similarly established and ordained, that the aforesaid jubilee year, with the same indulgences and full remissions of sins, should begin in the year next to come from the vigil of the nativity of the same and, as follows, should be continued, as is more fully contained in each of the aforesaid letters, (whose tenor we will to be held as expressed in the present document). But because afterwards both we and the same Paul, our predecessor, while he lived among men, intent upon the salvation of souls of the faithful, being pressed by the prayers of many princes and other faithful of Christ and devout persons, deemed it right to grant various indulgences and full remissions of sins to certain churches, monasteries and pious places; on account of which the concourse of peoples perhaps might be retarded from the aforesaid basilicas and churches, or the celebration of the same jubilee year might be diminished or interrupted, with no small detriment to souls: we, who are bound by the duty of pastoral ministry to look to the benefit and salvation of all believers, (lest on account of the extension of these other indulgences, hitherto granted by us or by the same Paul or by our other predecessors, this holy work and the year of jubilee of remedy and grace be interrupted, or the faithful and pious be rendered deprived of so great a gift,) wishing to provide with fitting remedies, all and singular full indulgences, even at the instance of the jubilee, and also for commuting vows or dispensing concerning them and concerning ill-gotten or through usurious wickedness or another illicit mode extorted uncertain things, or remitting and purifying them under certain manner and form, confessors with power of absolving, even in cases reserved to the apostolic see, faculties, concessions, and indults granted by us and the same see, or by its authority to whatsoever churches, monasteries, hospitals, and pious places, universities, fraternities whatsoever, both in perpetuity and for a certain time, in life or in the article of death, in any manner or by any cause, howsoever granted and granted, and hereafter perhaps to be granted or to be granted, by apostolic authority by the tenor of the present from the fullness of apostolic power, we suspend until our and the same see's good pleasure, and we will those to be suspended during our good pleasure and that of the aforesaid see, nor in the meantime to benefit anyone, the indulgences nevertheless of the basilicas and churches of the said city remaining in their full force, we strictly forbid that other indulgences (except those only) be preached or announced in public or private places, or that under their pretext anything be exacted by questors in any way whatsoever. Nay rather, we will and command by the authority of the present that all questors and preachers whatsoever be barred by the ordinaries of places from making such preachings and collections, under such censures and ecclesiastical penalties as shall seem fitting. Let no one whatsoever be permitted to infringe this page of our suspension, prohibition, mandate and will, or to contravene it with rash presumption. If anyone, however, shall presume to attempt this: let him know that he will incur the indignation of almighty God and of the blessed Peter and Paul, his Apostles. Given at Tivoli in the year of the incarnation of the Lord, one thousand four hundred seventy-three.

CAP. IV.
