Breve sui matrimoni misti in Alsazia

Breve di papa Clemente XIII ·

Clemente PP. XIII.
Diletto Figlio Nostro salute, e l'Apostolica benedizione.

Dato a Roma presso

Dilecte Fili Noster salutem, et Aposloliram benedictionem.

3 §. 4. Frustra igitur fuerit Catholicorum usque adhuc adbibitum studium , quo ex iia regionibus, quas tenent, damnati ab Ecclesia erroribus eliminarentur, cum impune licuerit in posterum, in medio eorumdem Catholicorum, eaindem veneficam doctrinam profiteri. Iluc accedit, quod si alteruter Coujugum. qui Catholicus sil, vita functus, liberos in prima nelale reliquerit, alteri Conjugi Haeretico, liberum erit venenatis sectae suae sensibus, filios suos inficere. Vides igitur, dilecte fili Noster, quid de prole cx bis conjugiis suscepta polliceri sibi possit Catholica Religio, et nmn vehementer timendum sit , ne cum per haec connubia propagare intendunt Catholicam Fidem, latius propagetur baeresi* ; et quod omnium deterrimum, majores in dies Majora »*- Ictu «tamoa Bubuli obventura •»■( es Pilenti auclunliU , ai ia alicui ar- «it.

Clement PP. XIII.
Beloved Son of Ours, greetings and Apostolic blessing.

1 § 1. How greatly the Catholic Church abhors marriages between Catholics and Heretics, and how solicitous she is for the eternal salvation of her children, and has always deterred them from joining the bond of Matrimony with Heretics, beloved son of Ours, you certainly do not ignore. Now, however, we have learned that it is being attempted that henceforth in Alsatia it should be lawful to contract such marriages, which would seem to be beneficial to the Catholic Religion, if they were permitted only on this condition, that the offspring received from them should be educated in the Apostolic Roman faith: by this reasoning they say it is not far off that, with gratitude to God, the entire people of that region should be brought to the true religion. § 2. But to Us it appears far otherwise, and from such marriages We believe that great harm will be brought to the Catholic Church. For if the Mother, with whom rests the primary education of the offspring, is alien from our sacred things, what is not to be feared concerning the religion of the children? For she, mindful of maternal love for their eternal salvation, will not omit any occasion by which to imbue them with the doctrine of her sect, which she alone believes to be true. And if she should mock the Husband, either fasting in vigils and abstaining from meat, or washing away the filth of his soul in the sacrament of penance, or approaching the Sacred Table of the Eucharist, as if pursuing empty things, as will often happen, it will certainly come to pass that contempt of the most sacred things will gradually steal into the minds of the children. But what they have seized upon from tender age is most difficult to root out from their souls.

2 § 3. And on the other hand, if the Mother indeed cultivates the Catholic Religion, but the Father is devoted to some Heretical sect, will he not jokingly mock in the sight of the children the words and deeds of his Wife which pertain to Religion? Will not the childish mind of the children, among whom the Father's authority prevails greatly, waver somewhat concerning the truth of the Religion which the Mother follows? What if a serious dispute should arise between Husband and Wife concerning Religion? Will not the children, whose minds, alternating in the dispute of their parents, are driven now this way, now that, gradually slip into indifference in Religion: than which nothing is more pernicious, nothing more hostile to Religion; since it utterly destroys all Religion, true and false alike. It is also evident that through these marriages a more open field is opened to the Lutheran heresy, by which it can spread more widely. For indeed girls imbued with Lutheran error, to whom now, only in certain places, it is permitted to establish a dwelling with their husbands, if they marry Catholic men, they must follow them wherever it pleases them to dwell. Moreover, the newly married woman will admit many from her sect into her husband's family; nor can the ministers of the false sect be prohibited from his house, who come to visit her for the sake of greeting. These certainly will not fail in their ministry, by which they confirm their sheep in error, and will suggest to the Mother the art by which the seeds of good doctrine in the minds of the children, from the very time when they begin to sprout, may be dried up.

3 § 4. In vain, therefore, will have been the effort hitherto applied by Catholics, by which from those regions which they hold, errors condemned by the Church were to be eliminated, when it will be permitted with impunity henceforth, in the midst of the same Catholics, to profess that same poisonous doctrine. To this is added, that if either of the Spouses, who is Catholic, should depart this life, leaving children in tender age, it will be free for the Heretical Spouse to infect his children with the poisoned sentiments of his sect. You see, therefore, beloved son of Ours, what the Catholic Religion can promise itself concerning the offspring received from these marriages, and how greatly it is to be feared lest, while through these marriages they intend to propagate the Catholic Faith, the heresy be propagated more widely; and what is worst of all, greater evils will befall with each passing day.

4 To all these things, with the solicitude of a Pastor, We have given thought, lest from the carelessness of mortals, which in the present time would not be conducive to their Dignity, there should arise for the Religion, whatever indifference, by which an access is usually opened to impiety.

5 § 5. We have pursued these matters at somewhat greater length and more fully, but so that from this prolixity of Our letter, Our solicitude may be understood.

6 leagues, a matter of the utmost gravity and importance, scarcely bringing our discourse to an end. But since we believe that the reasons which we have touched upon above, why these marriages ought not to be permitted, are not obscure to your wisdom and prudence, being greatly confident in your piety and in the zeal for the House of God with which we know your soul to burn, we beseech your charity and adjure you in the Lord, that you effect by whatever authority you possess, that henceforth no place be given to these marriages in Alsatia; in which Province the laws of the Church have recovered their strength from the edict which, with such glory to his name, the most glorious memory of Louis XIV issued in the year MDCLXXXIII. If you shall accomplish this, this will not be the least praise of your deeds gloriously done for Religion, that by your counsel and effort you shall have preserved the faith of the Catholic Church and its safety snatched from so grave a peril. And to you, our beloved son, whom we love uniquely, we impart the Apostolic blessing with the utmost affection. Given at Rome at
