Bolla di conferma dei privilegi della Compagnia di Gesù
vilegiorum Societatis Iesu, eiusque collegiorum. i Al diletto figlio Ignazio di Lojola, Preposto generale della Società di Gesù. Giulio Papa III.
Dilettissimo figlio, salute e benedizione apostolica.
2 § 2. Alle vostre dunque in questa parte giuste supplicazioni a noi rivolte, inclinati, \ Ex Rogest. in Archiv. Vatic. — De hac Societate vide in Pauli III constitutione xxxiii, pag. 303. Hic siquidem Pontifex eamdem Societatem, eiusque constitutiones approbavit, privilegiaque illi elargitus est quamplurima.

privileges of the Society of Jesus, and its colleges. To our beloved son Ignatius of Loyola, Superior General of the Society of Jesus. Julius, Pope III.
Beloved son, greetings and apostolic blessing.
1 § 1. The sacred Religion, under which our beloved sons of the Society of Jesus, having rejected the vanities of the world, render service pleasing to the Most High in a spirit of humility, and by fervent studies draw others through examples of virtue and solid doctrine to the service of divine Majesty, calls for favor, and the merits of your devotion move us to strengthen by apostolic firmness those things which through us and our predecessor have been providently granted to you and to them; and to cherish you with greater favors and graces, granting to you those things by which provision may be made more abundantly for your convenience and for the souls both of yourselves and of others, to whose aid you devote yourselves.
2 § 2. Your just petitions in this matter having inclined us, all and each of the letters, faculties, indulgences, even plenary indulgences, concessions, immunities granted to you and to the office of the Superior General of this Society for the time being, as well as the faculty, among other things, of dispensing with persons of this Society concerning fasts and forbidden foods through yourself or others, and of absolving the professed members of this Society from cases of heresy and other matters against the faith and consequent censures of any kind, even through yourself and your successors, or others similarly professed and suitable for this, to be appointed by you and by the Superior General of this Society for the time being, and, insofar as it is necessary, of dispensing in the forum of conscience, granted by Paul, Pope III, of happy memory, our predecessor, and perhaps by us, both in general and in particular and otherwise in any manner whatsoever and under whatever tenors and forms, the tenors of all these and the causes for which they were granted, being considered as sufficiently expressed in the present, we approve and confirm by apostolic authority, from our certain knowledge, by the tenor of these presents, and we add to them the strength of perpetual and unshakeable firmness, and decree that they be inviolably observed, and that under no derogations, revocations, suspensions, alterations, decrees, declarations, and apostolic letters whatsoever, even containing any clauses general or special, even derogatory of derogations, more efficacious and unusual, and even irritant decrees, under whatever form and expression of words, or under the rules of the Apostolic Chancery or apostolic constitutions made and issued in any manner for the time being, they can ever be comprehended, or in any way derogated from, or revoked, or altered; and thus by whatever judges and commissioners, exercising any authority whatsoever, in whatever cause and instance, having removed from them and from each of them any other facility and authority of judging and interpreting, they ought to be judged and defined, and from now we decree that whatever is otherwise attempted concerning these by anyone, under any authority, knowingly or unknowingly, is null and void.
3 JULIUS III, POPE
4 Being inclined by their rightful supplications, we approve and confirm by apostolic authority, from our certain knowledge, by the tenor of these presents, all and each of the letters, faculties, indulgences, concessions, even plenary ones, grants, immunities, confirmations, exemptions, liberties, graces, privileges and favors granted to you and to the superior and to the general superior of such Society existing for the time being by the disposition thereof, as well as the faculty, among other things, of dispensing with persons of such Society concerning fasts and prohibited foods through yourself or others, and of absolving from cases of heresy and other matters against the faith and consequent censures of any kind whatsoever, even through yourself and your successors, or others similarly professed and suitable for this purpose, to be appointed by you and by the general superior of such Society existing for the time being, and, insofar as it is necessary, of dispensing in the forum of conscience, granted by Paul, Pope the Third, of happy memory, our predecessor, and perhaps by us, both in general and in particular and otherwise in any manner whatsoever and under whatever tenors and forms, having the tenors of all these things and the causes for which they were granted as sufficiently expressed in these presents, and we add to them the strength of perpetual and unshakeable firmness, and that they be inviolably observed, and that under no derogations, revocations, suspensions, alterations, decrees, declarations and apostolic letters whatsoever, even containing any general or special clauses, even derogatory of derogations, more efficacious and unusual and also invalidating decrees, under whatever form and expression of words, or by the rules of the Apostolic Chancery or apostolic constitutions made and issued in any manner for the time being, they can ever at any time be comprehended, or in any way derogated from, or be revoked or altered in any way; and thus by any judges and others whatsoever etc.
5 § 4. And moreover to you and to other Superior Generals of this Society for the time being existing and to others to whom you shall communicate your authority for this commutation, that you may commute the recitation of this office for those who, on account of infirmity, shall seem to you to be excused, into another pious work or lighter prayer, lasting however during the infirmity, at your discretion.
6 § 3. And nevertheless, so that you and the Society of the people of this kind may be able to exhibit service more quietly and devoutly pleasing to the Most High in the humility of spirit, we extend and enlarge the faculty and license of postponing and putting back the divine office otherwise granted to you, to this end: that you and the religious existing for the time being of this Society, from legitimate and just causes (in which we burden the conscience of you and your successors as general superiors existing for the time being and of others whom you shall substitute for this), may freely and without scruple of conscience postpone the office itself to the celebration of Mass, by the authority and tenor aforesaid.
7 § 4. And moreover to you and to other superiors of the same Society existing for the time being, and to others to whom you shall have communicated your authority for this commutation, [we grant] that you may commute the recitation of this office for those who, on account of infirmity, shall seem to you to be excused, into another pious work or a lighter prayer, lasting however during the infirmity, at your discretion.
8 § 5. Likewise to the scholars of the colleges of the Society of this kind existing in Universities or in a place of general study, if they, after a rigorous and public examination, shall be found suitable in the same Universities, and the rectors of such Universities shall refuse to promote them freely and for the love of God, without any payment of money, in the aforesaid colleges by the general superior for the time being existing, or,

13 § 6. Also to the inferior superiors, by the general superior for the time being existing or also to the provincials, especially in the places of the Indies and other remote parts, for the time being appointed, that they themselves may communicate and grant to any other persons of the Society of this kind professed, if they seem good to them, as often as it shall seem good to them, yet with thy knowledge and of the general superiors for the time being existing, whatever graces, faculties, concessions and indults communicated and granted to them by thee and the same general or provincial superior for the time being existing.
14 § 7. And moreover to the religious of the Society of this kind for the time being worn out by age or burdened by some grave infirmity, and not suitable for working in the vineyard of the Lord, even professed, that in the colleges of the Society of this kind, with the licence of thee and the general superior for the time being existing or of the inferiors to whom thou shalt have communicated or shall have communicated this faculty, they may dwell, and from their revenues and income sustain themselves, without any scruple of conscience, freely and lawfully, we grant full and free, by the authority and tenor of the foregoing, facility and licence.
15 § 8. Notwithstanding any apostolic constitutions and ordinances issued in provincial and synodal councils, general or special, and the statutes and customs of the Society and Universities of this kind, roborated by oath, apostolic confirmation or any other firmness, privileges also, indults and apostolic letters granted, approved and renewed to the same Society and Universities, their rectors, doctors and persons, under whatsoever tenors and forms, and with whatsoever, even derogatory clauses of derogatory clauses, and other more efficacious and unusual clauses, irritant and other decrees, even by our own motion and from the fullness of apostolic power and otherwise in any way whatsoever. All of which, even if special, specific and express mention ought to be had of them and their whole tenors, or any other expression, these tenors being sufficiently expressed in the present, otherwise remaining in their force, we derogate from on this occasion only specially and expressly, and from all other things contrary whatsoever.
16 Obstantiam derogatio.
17 ciently expressed in the present, otherwise remaining in their force, we derogate from on this occasion only specially and expressly, and from all other things contrary whatsoever.
