A questi tempi siamo stati chiamati.

Noi riceviamo i suoi sacramenti, quelli li disprezzano. Ora tocca a noi condurla.

Nunquam adeo coartatos catholicae ridei limites superior aetas vidit. Officium nostrae salutis, in qua Deus' noster prò 25 nostra redemptione pretiosum Sanguinem fudit, barbarus hostis invasit. Lectum illuni purpureum et suavissimis fragrantem odoribus, in quo propter nos vita nostra obdormivit in Domino 7, spurcissimae Sarracenorum manus obtrectavere atque obtrectant, et quaestus tamen causa Christianis ostendunt. Recuperavit ea sancta loca Christiana virtus, aliquando zelo ridei atque armis potens ; mox desidia atque ignavia perdidit. Ecclesiae pulcherrimae, quae invocabant Dominum nostrum Iesum Christum, illique psalmos dies noctesque decantabant, nunc horridum atque abominandum Mahomet nomen implorant, et, relieto veri Dei cultu, nefandis milmtae sacri», obscoenii serviunt cerimoniis. Alii, marcentes otio, deliciis indulgent. Alii cumulandis opibus inhiant; neque sacerdotes, neque populares suum 30 satis officium faciunt. Cultus divinus ubique imminutus est. Testo inglese
1 greeting and apostolic blessing. The Lord has called us to the sacred see of blessed Peter, and has entrusted to our weak shoulders the place of His most beloved Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, on earth. He has committed to us the pasture of His flock, and has commanded us to govern the ship of the faithful people tossed upon the high seas. Grievous indeed is this burden to us: nor are our powers such as to be sufficient to bear the weight of so great a governance1. The sea through which we must navigate is most tempestuous and dangerous. The vessel in which we are carried wavers and totters, the rowers tremble and grow faint, the winds are contrary, and we are tossed about in a horrible storm. For after peace was restored to the churches under the Emperor Constantine, never was the pressure upon the Lord's flock such as we now behold. Never did a former age see the boundaries of the Catholic faith so straitened. Once the sound of the Apostles went forth into all the earth, and their words unto the ends of the world. Almost all the kings of the earth, all tribes, all peoples bent their necks to Christ the Lord, and, imbued with the sacraments of saving faith, acclaimed glory to God in the highest through His only-begotten Son and on earth peace to men of good will. Then, more than eight hundred years ago, arose the false prophet Mahomet, who, blaspheming the most sacred Trinity, turned away not only his own kinsmen, but the Egyptians and all Syria from the true and orthodox religion. The office of our salvation, in which our God shed His precious Blood for our redemption, the barbarous enemy invaded. That purple bed, fragrant with the sweetest perfumes, in which our life slumbered in the Lord for our sake, the most foul hands of the Saracens have defiled and do defile, and yet for the sake of gain they display it to Christians. Christian virtue recovered those holy places, at one time powerful in zeal of faith and in arms; soon sloth and cowardice lost them. Gradually then all Asia was lost, and the peoples of Libya fell away. The most beautiful churches, which invoked our Lord Jesus Christ and sang psalms to Him day and night, now invoke the horrible and abominable name of Mahomet, and, abandoning the worship of the true God, serve with impious and obscene ceremonies. The Strait of Cadiz has been crossed, and the poisons of Mahomet have penetrated to the Spaniards. A great part of Baetica is alienated from us, in which the Saracen kingdom, which they call Granada, holds sway, most hostile to the Christian name. On the other side, where Europe extends toward the east, the sea could not protect the Christian religion. The barbarous race of the Turks, hateful to God and men, proceeding from eastern Scythia, has occupied Cappadocia, Pontus, Bithynia, Troas, Pisidia, Cilicia, and all that they call Minor Asia. Nor content with these, relying upon the impotence and dissensions of the Greeks, they crossed the Hellespont, and have occupied almost all the Greek cities of Attica, Boeotia, Phocis, Achaia, Macedonia and Thrace. There remained the royal city of Constantinople, the pillar and head of all the East, the patriarchal and imperial seat, the sole dwelling-place of Greek wisdom, where once were so many most magnificent temples, so many sanctuaries, so many palaces of princes, so many most noble dwellings of citizens, so many public and private works constructed at enormous expense and with singular industry, that foreigners coming there, admiring the splendor of the city, said it was not so much the homeland of mortals as of heavenly beings. This city too, in our own days, while the Latins divided among themselves abandoned the Greeks, the most cruel nation of the Turks invaded, despoiled, and triumphed over it, that city which gave laws to all the East. Peloponnesus too, with this city conquered, was taken by arms, and the Christian people were led into servitude. Acarnania is now laid waste and Epirus, Serbia, which was once called Upper Moesia, save for a few exceptions, has come into the power of the enemy. The Bosnians, or Illyrians, the Cardani and Paeonians pay tribute to the Turks. Nor does the savage rage of the Turks rest in this manner. The lord of an unjust nation, to be called rather a foul beast than a king, to be called rather a most fierce dragon than an emperor, thirsting for human blood, with vast forces gathered together presses upon the Hungarians; from here he harasses the Epirotes, Albanians, and us; and, swollen with pride in himself, boasts that he will overturn the most sacred Gospel and all the law of Christ; and threatens to Christians, wherever they may be, chains, scourges, slaughter and horrible tortures. The enemy of mankind does not sleep, but goes about seeking whom he may devour1. Hence the Turks press, thence the Saracens assault. Christian princes, to whom the Turks could in no way be equal, divided among themselves, strive rather to avenge their own injuries than the insults to Christ, and prefer private advantages to public good. Some, languishing in idleness, indulge in pleasures. Others are intent upon accumulating wealth; and neither priests nor people perform their duty sufficiently. Divine worship everywhere is diminished. Neither do superiors keep the path of justice, nor do inferiors submit the neck to obedience. All things are confused and disordered. Divine piety is blasphemed everywhere, and God is contemned in His commandments. There is no fear, no reverence for laws. For this reason the heavenly Deity, angered with us, permits the arms of the Turks to prosper against us; and those who were wont to rule over other nations, He has made tributary and subject to Christian infidels and barbarians. To these times God has called us. To meet these evils, He has placed us upon the Roman throne. A difficult province indeed has been entrusted

3 rst noble. We know our weakness, and under so great a weight of dignity we tremble exceedingly. Yet we do not lose heart, nor do we despair of the mercy of Christ. But the more our strength falls short of the dignity entrusted to us, the greater aid do we await from on high. For although the judgments of the great God are inscrutable and his ways unsearchable (nor can human curiosity attain to his mysteries), yet this is most certain, that our truth, which is Christ, cannot lie. His oracles exist, and in the holy Gospel there are sure promises, by which the Lord testified that he would be present with his flock even unto the consummation of the world. We trust in his power, because those who walk rightly shall not lack his aid. Heaven and earth shall pass away: his words and promises shall never fail, nor shall one jot pass from his law. The apostolic ship is often tossed about, but is not submerged; it is shaken, but not broken; it is assailed, but not conquered. God permits his elect to be tempted; he does not permit them to be overcome. For this reason, although we have found the state of the Church turbulent in our time, and the sea around the faithful vessel most shipwreck-prone, yet confidence does not fail us, that with his aid, who from his treasures has brought forth the winds and commands them and the sea, we are able to reach the harbor of salvation. We cannot make certain promises about future things, which Divine Majesty has hidden in dark obscurity. It is permitted to us to promise and openly proclaim that God does not abandon those who hope in him. There exist in Holy Scripture innumerable examples, offering us the best hope. We pass over the wonders wrought by Moses, and he who succeeded him, Joshua. We pass over Gideon, Jephthah, Samson and those whom the books of Judges record, who with a small force often destroyed countless enemies, when they had recourse to divine aid. The young David was not abandoned by divine help against the fierce Goliath. King Hezekiah, bearing the evils of siege, was not abandoned by the angel of the Lord, who slew the army of Sennacherib, the most powerful king. In the small city of Bethulia the Lord protected the Jews against the proud Holofernes through the hands of a poor widow. The Maccabees how often destroyed the numerous forces of Antiochus, although they themselves were very few and unarmed.
4 Divine protections were present for those who trusted in the Lord. The hand of the Lord is not shortened, although our sins have increased, which have turned his eyes away from us. On account of our sins evils have befallen us. Our crimes have made us hateful. Our iniquities have destroyed us. The hand of the Lord has been made heavy upon a sinful people, and Christian pride has been delivered to scourges. God deals with us according to his manner. Those whom he loves, he corrects and chastises. These are paternal blows, requiring amendment rather than punishment. But if we return to his mercy, amending our works and grieving
5 For iniquities He Himself, God, will do penance, and His sentence, and the fury with which He was against us, He will turn into mercy and grace. Never is His mercy denied to those who implore it. The Lord is ready to pardon, and does not weigh us in equal balance with Thee. We are Thy adopted sons, they are emancipated; we are citizens of Thy city, they are enemies: we are within the Church, they are without. We receive His sacraments, they despise them. Nothing stands in our way, except that neglecting the divine law we are overcome by human frailty, and being prone to sin we often put aside the fear of God, and do not, as we are obliged, keep the divine precepts. But if we turn back, and with a simple heart implore God's mercy, there is no doubt that all things will turn out well for us, and the Lord, reconciled to us, will extend His terror over our enemies. This has been proven in recent days. For when the leader of the Turks entered Hungary with a mighty hand and with a very numerous army of foot soldiers and cavalry, and trusted in his power, and did not doubt that he would lay all things low, then the Crusaders, unarmed and naked, armed only with faith and protected by heavenly aid, destroyed so great an army. What should be hoped for, if, coming together as one, Christian princes should take up arms in concert for the defense of the Catholic faith? The power of the Turks is not so great as is commonly believed, nor are their forces equal to ours. For in the number of soldiers, and in strength and splendor of arms, and in skill in warfare, Christians have always been superior to Turks. And if at any time our armies have been defeated, this has been done more by divine permission on account of our sins than by the virtue of the enemy, and never has an bloodless victory come to them. Nor have our men fought with all their strength, as they do, but a few of ours have engaged in battle against all their power. And yet they have often found a happy outcome, as we reported a short time ago happened in Hungary. And now therefore, if we direct our eyes to heaven, if renouncing wickedness, taking up the shield of faith, we fight against the enemies of the life-giving Cross with good confidence, the Lord will fight, and will make His standard a sign for good with us, and will give victory into our hand, nor will He any longer permit the Turks to rule over Christians. Led and encouraged by this hope, which our predecessors undertook for the defense of the Catholic religion against the Turks and other barbarians, enemies of the Christian name, we have determined to pursue with all our efforts, and with the help of the Most High we trust to complete and perfect. For although they had greater prudence, more penetrating counsel, longer experience, yet in desire and zeal for so great a matter we yield to none of them. May God, who gives the will to those who act well, not deny the power to pursue it for His kindness. Our predecessors declared war against the Turks by land and sea. It is now our part to wage it. Nor do we shrink from labor, nor is our mind averse to expense. There will be nothing in our power which we refuse to pour out for so holy, so useful, so necessary an expedition. Nor will the expenses be heavy to us, nor the labors tedious. But because we are about to undertake a great matter, and the cause is common which we pursue (for it is a matter of the protection of the Christian faith, in which we are all reborn, and without which we cannot be saved), it has seemed necessary to us that this should be done by common resources and strength, and should be treated by common counsel. Turning therefore in our mind, and weighing with careful meditation in what way the Christian forces could come together in one place to wage so useful a war, we have found no more expedient way than if we convoke the Christian princes and potentates to some one place, in which, with themselves or with their envoys furnished with full mandate, we ourselves might meet with them, and treat of such an expedition, and finally conclude something worthy of the Christian name. As we considered the place of the convention, two places occurred to us, scarcely three days' journey apart, which, when the conditions of things and times are weighed, seem sufficiently suitable, namely Mantua situated on the Mincio river, not far from Lake Benaco, and Udine in the territory of Friuli. For Mantua, near the mountains which separate Gaul and Germany from Italy, has such a situation that the princes beyond the Alps and the powers of Italy can easily betake themselves there. Moreover, it is a spacious city, and abounding in things which are necessary for human use. Udine also is a notable town and capable of a great population, most suitable for holding conventions by reason of the fertility of the surrounding territory and the nearness of the sea, and most convenient for the matter which is to be treated. For those who from Italy are about to set out against the Turks by land journey will first come to Friuli. The peoples of Gaul and Spain, and the Rhenish Teutons would also have a not inconvenient route by this way for the same expedition. To this is added the fact that the Hungarians, about whose safety the matter chiefly concerns (for they are the chief ones who in our time are vexed by the arms of the Turks, and constitute themselves a wall for our religion), are not far from this town, and can easily set forth their necessities to the convention of Christians to be held there, and thence receive consolation more opportunely and conveniently. Nor would the passage to that place be difficult for our most dear son in Christ Frederick, Emperor of the Romans, ever august, if, as we trust in his most excellent will for the common good, he should wish to betake himself there, since his paternal domains are adjacent to the territory of Friuli. Wishing therefore, with divine aid, as we are bound by the duty of our pastoral office, to consult the safety of the Christian people, and for the protection of our religion to gather aid and defenses from all sides, by the counsel and assent of our venerable brothers, the cardinals of the Holy Roman Church, in one of the aforesaid places on the Kalends of the coming June, for taking counsel in this matter for defense, by common deliberation between us and all Christians who hold some notable principality, we have appointed a day, and by this letter we decree it appointed. We summon all and each of our most dear and beloved sons in Christ, the aforesaid Emperor of the Romans, the other kings, and princes both ecclesiastical and secular, dukes, marquises, and also communities which live by their own laws and can bring some aid for the defense of the faith, by the bowels of

7 T. 60 t In the name of Our Lord Jesus Christ, we exhort, we beseech and we admonish, that on the appointed day in the other place fixed by us, if by any means they can, let them come; but if not, let those furnished with notable and full authority come and hasten to be present: nor let anyone remain at home, unless an unavoidable necessity compel them, but rather let them follow our example. For indeed, lest anything be lacking on our part for the conduct of affairs, although our presence in the city of Rome is necessary, and we cannot, without great inconvenience to ourselves and damage and peril to the lands of the Roman Church subject to us, migrate to foreign provinces, yet because we esteem the defence of the Catholic faith more highly than the protection of the Ecclesiastical Patrimony, and we prefer spiritual matters to temporal, we have determined to leave for a time our beloved Roman see and our spouse, and on the appointed day, whether in March, June or July, God willing, we shall establish ourselves there. Nor shall we refuse to undertake any difficult burdens that are bearable by our shoulders, which shall seem expedient or in any way opportune for the prosecution of so sacred and necessary a work for us and for those who shall have assembled on the appointed day. For we are not those who, for the conduct of the affairs of the Catholic Church, for the protection of religion, for the magnification of the name of Christ, either fear expenses or labour. May divine mercy only grant that no impediment be presented to our desire; for such is our mind, this our firm and certain resolve, to make light of any inconveniences, any dangers whatsoever, that we may provide for the necessity of the orthodox faith, with the honour of God and the salvation and peace of the Christian people. Given at Rome, at St. Peter's, on the third day before the Ides of October, in the first year of our pontificate, 1458.
