ABRA DE RACONIS, CHARLES-FRANÇOIS D'. - French theologian, b. at Raconis, diocese of Chartres, ca. 1580, d. July 16, 1646, of a Calvinist family, but converted to Catholicism. He was professor of philosophy in the college of Plessis from 1609; then of theology from 1615 in that of Navarre.

In 1618 he was appointed preacher and chaplain to the king; and in 1637 bishop of Lavaur. He owes his fame above all to his numerous polemical works against the French Calvinist Protestants, first, and then, urged on by St. Vincent de Paul, against the Jansenists, in particular against Pierre de Moulin. He also defended the primacy of the Pope against Martin de Barcos, nephew of Saint-Cyran. Special mention is due to his work for the confutation and condemnation of the book of Arnauld (v.), "La fréquente communion", which stirred up furious storms against him on the part of the Jansenists.
