Abu al-Barakat Ibn Kabar, Abū al-Barakāt, Shams al-Ri'asa Abu al-Barakat Ibn Kabar
ABŪ 'L-BARAKĀT (Shams ar-Ri'āsah Ibn Kabar). - CopticMonophysite theologian of the 13th-14th century, d. before 1327. He was a priest and perhaps a physician, and served as secretary and assistant to the emir Rukn ad-din Baybars.
He left several collections of an encyclopedic character, of which the principal is entitled: Lamp of the Darkness, or Exposition of the Divine Service, a veritable manual of ecclesiastical sciences for the use of the clergy, divided into 24 chapters. More important is the Reply to the Muslims and the Jews on the Meaning of the Christian Beliefs in God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit and in the Divinity of Jesus, Son of Mary, a kind of apologetic treatise in three chapters. These works are written in Arabic; A. also compiled an Arabic-Coptic dictionary for the use of ecclesiastics, which he entitled Scala Magna. This lexicon had the good fortune to be published by A. Kircher in his work Lingua aegyptiaca restituta (Rome 1643, pp. 41-272). Except for certain chapters of the Lamp of the Darkness, the other works are unpublished, in manuscripts of the Arabic collection of the Vaticana. They constitute the best source for knowing the history and the institution of the Coptic Monophysite Church, to which illustrious Coptists such as M. Vansleb and E. Renaudot have had recourse.
