ACKERMANN CHOQUET, LOUISE-VICTORINE. - French poet, b. in Paris in 1813, d. in Nice in 1870.
Her works, the principal ones among which are the Contes en vers (1855), Premières poésies (1873), Poésies philosophiques (1874) and Pensées d'une solitaire (1883), are mediocre from the artistic point of view and are interwoven with philosophical considerations inspired by an atheistic and pessimistic conception of life. Under the guidance of her father, an ardent Voltairean, her culture was formed within the sphere of Enlightenment philosophy. After some family misfortunes, which struck her deeply, she sought to reinforce her ideas through the study of the rationalists, and of Kant and Schopenhauer in particular. Her writings, from the religious point of view, bear the influence of rationalism and display little knowledge of Christian theology and philosophy.
