ACKERMANN, LEOPOLD. - Exegete, b. and d. in Vienna (17 Nov. 1771-8 Sept. 1831). Having entered (1790) the Canons Regular of St. Augustine, under the name Peter Fourier, at Klosterneuburg, after completing his theological studies in Vienna he taught there hermeneutics, archaeology and biblical languages, and directed the library there, enriching it. In 1806 he succeeded J. Jahn (v.) at the University of Vienna, where for 25 years he taught introduction and biblical archaeology, and Oriental languages, distinguishing himself for learning and piety.
He republished, corrected, Jahn's two works, Introductio in libros Veteris Foederis (Vienna 1825, as 3rd ed.; reprint 1839), and Archaeologia biblica breuiter exposita (ibid. 1826), included by Migne in the Cursus Scripturae Sacrae, II (1840), coll. 823-1068. Prophetae minores perpetua annotatione illustrati (ibid. 1830) is likewise not very original, but the philological commentary that A. devotes to the Masoretic text is good.
