ACKERMANN, LEOPOLD. - Exegete, born and died in Vienna (17 Nov. 1771–8 Sept. 1831). Having entered (1790) the Canons Regular of S. Agostino under the name of Pietro Fourier at Klosterneuburg, after completing his theological studies in Vienna he taught there hermeneutics, archaeology, and biblical languages, and directed and enriched its library. In 1806 he succeeded J. Jahn (v.) at the University of Vienna, where for 25 years he taught biblical introduction and archaeology, and Oriental languages, distinguishing himself by learning and piety.
He republished, with corrections, Jahn’s two works, Introductio in libros Veteris Foederis (Vienna 1825, as the 3rd ed.; reprint 1839), and Archaeologia biblica breuiter exposita (there 1826), included by Migne in the Cursus Scripturae Sacrae, II (1840), cols. 823–1068. Nor is Prophetae minores perpetua annotatione illustrati (there 1830) very original, but A.’s philological commentary on the Masoretic text is good.
