ADALGARO, saint, archbishop of BREMEN-HAMBURG. — Initially a monk of the monastery of Korvey (Westphalia), he was chosen by St. Rimberto, archbishop of Bremen-Hamburg, as his coadjutor and succeeded him in 888. His twenty years of governance were deeply troubled by internal disputes, on account of the archbishop of Cologne, who demanded the submission of his diocese, and by the invasions of the Hungarians and the consequent persecution of ecclesiastics. He took Höger, also a monk of Korvey, as his coadjutor. He died on 9 May 909, was buried in the church of St. Michael, and is honored on 29 Apr.
