ADRIANO OF MOSCOW. - Tenth and last patriarch of Moscow and of Russia, b. 2 Oct. 1627 and d. 15 Oct. 1700. Archimandrite in the monastery of Chudov, he was consecrated in 1686 metropolitan of Kazan and of Sviyazhsk; on 26 Aug. 1690 he became patriarch of Moscow. Following the wave of Westernism that had developed through the work of the regent Sophia and her favorite Vasily Golitsyn, the Russian Church found itself at that time faced with two tendencies: one that sought to draw closer to Roman Catholicism, the other that, favored by Peter I, wished to move closer to Protestantism. A. fought especially the first tendency; but he had, against his will, to witness the bloody repression of the revolution of the "streltsy," loyal to the old Russia, and to accept the new civil calendar. At his death the see remained vacant until in 1721 the patriarchal function was exercised by the Holy Synod.
