ADELMANN, Bishop of Brescia. - We know neither the place nor the date of his birth. A beloved disciple of Fulbert (v.) in the famous school of Chartres, he had as a companion Berengar of Tours, toward whom he always nurtured affection and compassion. He indeed wrote him two letters to turn him away from his errors; of these only the second survives, and it is not understood (PL 143, 1290), in which he splendidly sets out the Catholic doctrine concerning the Eucharist. From A. we also have the Rythmi Alphabetici, a kind of elegy in memory of his teachers and especially of Fulbert (PL 143, 1295-98). He was elected bishop of Brescia, between 1048 and 1050, and there displayed zealous diligence for the reform of the simoniacal and concubinous clergy. He died around 1061 and was buried in the basilica of Sts. Faustino and Giovita in Brescia.
