ADELMANNO, VESCOVO DI BRESCIA

ADELMANN, bishop of Brescia. — We do not know either the place or the date of his birth. A favourite disciple of Fulbert (v.), in the famous school of Chartres, he had as a companion Berengar of Tours, towards whom he always felt affection and pity. He in fact wrote two letters to dissuade him from his errors; only the second of these survives, and not in its entirety (PL 143, 1290), in which he splendidly sets forth the Catholic doctrine concerning the Eucharist. We also possess from A. the Rythm Alphabetici, a kind of elegy in memory of his masters and especially of Fulbert (PL 143, 1295-98). He was elected bishop of Brescia between 1048 and 1050, and there displayed zealous care for the reform of the simoniacal and concubinarian clergy. He died about 1061 and was buried in the basilica of SS. Faustinus and Jovita in Brescia.
