Adelmann, Bishop Of Brescia

ADELMANNO, bishop of BRESCIA. - We know neither the place nor the date of his birth. Fulberto (v.) at the famous school of Chartres, he had Berengario di Tours as a fellow pupil, toward whom he always felt affection and compassion. He wrote him two letters in order to turn him away from his errors; only the second of these remains, and it is not understood (PL 143, 1290), in which he splendidly sets forth Catholic doctrine concerning the Eucharist. Of A. we also have the Rythmi Alphabetici, a kind of elegy in memory of his teachers and especially of Fulberto (PL 143, 1295-98). He was elected bishop of Brescia between 1048 and 1050, and there displayed diligent zeal for the reform of the simoniacal and concubinary clergy. He died about 1061 and was buried in the basilica of SS. Faustino e Giovita at Brescia.
