ARCHIMANDRITE (ἀρχιμανθρίτης, etymologically head of the μάνδρα «sheepfold»). - Title of the superior of a monastery in the Eastern Church from the 4th century. In the 6th century it is reserved for the provost of a federation of monasteries and becomes synonymous with "exarch" and "protos". In more recent times a distinction is made between the actual archimandrite, superior of a monastery, for the most part an important one, and the titular one, a dignity granted honoris causa to monks and also, rather abusively, to secular priests. The archimandrite of the Basilian monastery of St. Mary of Grottaferrata is at the same time exarch with his own territory (Abbas nullius). The Superior General of the Ruthenian Basilians bears the title of Protoarchimandrite.
