BARŠAWMĀ. - Eutychian archimandrite, b. near Samosata, d. in 458.

Having become a fanatical follower of Eutyches, Theodosius II charged him with representing all the archimandrites at the robber council of Ephesus (449), and charged Dioscorus of Alexandria and Juvenal of Jerusalem with receiving him into it (Mansi, VI, 549). B. took part in it (ibid., 727) and threw the whole assembly into confusion by having armed soldiers, crowds of people and a thousand monks burst into the robber council in order to extract the condemnation of Flavian of Constantinople, who, beaten, died three days later. The Council of Chalcedon (451) gave him and his followers a peremptory term of 30 days to subscribe to the condemnation of Eutyches. Condemned, he died in exile in 458. His life, written in Syriac by his disciple Samuel, is unpublished. By the Monophysites B. is considered a saint and is celebrated on February 1 or 3.
