BARSANUPHIUS AND JOHN, Ascetics. - B., also called Barsanupius or Barsanorius, but not to be confused with the namesake leader of the Barsanians (v.), was a holy monk who lived between the 5th and 6th centuries, and who died around the year 540. A native of Egypt, he came to settle near Gaza in Palestine, where he led a penitential life with other famous monks, among them John "the prophet," who followed more closely in his footsteps. His works, together with those of the aforementioned disciple John, were edited by Nicodemus the Hagiorite, and printed in Venice in 1816. No fewer than 369 of B.'s letters are preserved, and 446 of John's.
B. is venerated on 11 April in Oria (Brindisi), where his relics were transported around 850; and on 6 February among the Easterners.
Even scantier are the biographical notices concerning J. τοῦ Σερίδου, from the name of the monastery in which he lived, but also called ὁ ἄλλος γέρον to distinguish him from his master B., styled ὁ μέγας γέρον. J., together with others, had Dorotheus as a disciple, and it seems that he died around the year 530.
Yet neither B. nor J., although ascetics and illustrious guides of the spiritual life, were priests.
