BARHADBESABBA. – Historian and Nestorian, born at Bet Asbaje (Persia); he was a student at the school of Nisibis under the direction of Hénanà, in the second half of the 6th century.

The catalogue of Ebediesu (G. S. Assemani, Bibl. Orient., III, Rome 1725, p. 169) attributes to B. several works, of which only a Church history in 32 chapters is still preserved. F. Nau (PO 9, 493 ff.) published the last 14 chapters. A. Sher (op. cit. 4, 320 ff.) published B.’s Treatise on the Foundation of the Schools. In 605 a certain B., bishop of Halwân, subscribed to the Synod of Gregory (J. B. Chabot, Synodicon Orient., Paris 1902, p. 379). Since there are contradictions between the two works, Baumstark (Geschichte der syrischen Literatur, Bonn 1922, p. 136) holds that the author of the first is different from B., bishop of Halwân and author of the second.
