ADUARTE, DIEGO. — Spanish Dominican, b. in Saragossa in 1566. After completing his studies in Alcalá and entering the Order in 1585, ten years later he went as a missionary to the Philippines, where he later became bishop of Nueva Segovia, on the island of Luzon, dying not long after in 1635, or according to others in 1637 or even 1639. In the dispute between the natives and the Spanish authorities he took a firm stand on the side of the former.
He wrote several accounts of the persecutions in Japan during the third and fourth decades of the 17th century, but his chief merit to the historiography of the Dominican apostolate in the Far East lies especially in his *Historia de la Provincia del SS. Rosario de la Orden dos Frailes Predicadores en las Islas Filipinas, Japón y China*, published posthumously in 1640.
