ADUARTE, DIEGO. - Spanish Dominican, b. at Saragossa in 1566. Having completed his studies at Alcalá and entered the Order in 1585, ten years later he went as a missionary to the Philippines, where he subsequently became bishop of Nueva Segovia, on the island of Luzon, dying not long afterward, in 1635, or, according to others, in 1637 or even 1639. In the dispute between the natives and the Spanish authorities, he decisively took the side of the former.
He wrote several accounts of the Japanese persecutions of the third and fourth decades of the seventeenth century, but he rendered particular service to the historiography of the Dominican apostolate in the Far East above all through his Historia de la Provincia del SS. Rosario de la Orden dos Frailes Predicatores en las Islas Philipinas, Japón y China, published posthumously in 1640.
