COCCHI, ANGELO. - Dominican, b. in Florence in 1597, d. at Fogan on 18 Nov. 1633. In 1622 he was sent to Manila, where he applied himself to the study of the Tagalog and Chinese languages. On 12 Feb. 1626 he set out for Formosa with other fathers, and at the end of 1630 he went to China. During the voyage the Chinese sailors killed some passengers, among them also Fr. Tommaso Sierra, who was accompanying him. C. miraculously escaped death and after many adventures finally arrived at Fogan. Presented to the viceroy of Fukien at Foockow, he was not received as ambassador because of the lack of credentials and gifts, which he had lost. Finally in 1631 the viceroy received him as ambassador, ordering him to leave China; but the Chinese Christians hid him at Fogan, and so he continued his ministry.
