AGNES OF POITIERS, Saint. - Abbess of the 6th century, whose feast falls on 13 May. Educated by Queen Radegund, A. became the first abbess of the monastery of the Holy Cross, founded in Poitiers by the aforementioned queen shortly after the middle of the 6th century. As a result of the obstacles placed in their way by Maroveus, bishop of Poitiers, Radegund and A. introduced, around 570, the rule of St. Caesarius of Arles into the new monastery. A.'s friendly relations with the poet Venantius Fortunatus are well known. A. died before 589.
