ADEMAR OF CHABANNES. - French Benedictine and chronicler, b. at Chabannes, near Angoulême, ca. 988, d. at Jerusalem in 1034. He became a monk in the abbey of Saint-Cybard near Angoulême, where he acquired a vast culture. Ca. 1029 he wrote a very interesting letter on the apostolate of St. Martial, affirming that this saint (patron of Aquitaine and of the abbey of Limoges, with which A. had close bonds of friendship, so much so that he was considered a monk of this abbey rather than of that of Saint-Cybard) was one of the 72 disciples of the Lord: an affirmation that A. also defended in several councils and synods.
A chronicle of his on the history of Aquitaine is a personal work only from ch. 16 of book III (that is, from the year 830), while the preceding part is nothing but a compendium of pre-existing chronicles. Also of great value is his list of the abbots of St. Martial at Limoges from the year 848. Of his sermons and poems the autographs are preserved, edited only partially.
