ADEMARO di MONTEIL. — Bishop of Le Puy, born in the first half of the 11th century. He was first a knight, then entered the clergy and, around 1061, became bishop of Le Puy. He took part in the Council of Clermont and was appointed by Urban II as apostolic legate to the First Crusade. He departed for the Holy Land with the army commanded by Raimondo, count of Toulouse. He took part in many expeditions and did everything in his power to preserve the Crusade’s religious character and to keep it on the path toward the Holy Sepulchre. He died of the plague at Antioch on 1 Aug. 1098. Alberico di Trois-Fontaines attributed the Salve Regina to him (MGH, Scriptores, XXIII, p. 828). Tasso includes him in Gerusalemme Liberata, Cantos I, II, XVIII.
