ADEMOLLO, LUIGI and CARLO. - LUIGI, painter, b. in Milan on 30 April 1764, d. in Florence on 11 February 1839. Having begun his artistic studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Milan, in 1782 he went to Rome, where he embraced the then dominant academic theories; he subsequently established his residence in Florence.
He left sacred and secular works in Florence (Cappella terrena and Galleria Palatina in the Palazzo Pitti, Storie della vita di David at the S.ma Annunziata); in Lucca; in the Cathedrals of Livorno and Arezzo; in various private palaces in Siena; and in the Collegial Church of S. Maria a Monte, where, besides the Passione di Cristo, he is credited with the decoration of the ceiling with the Visione di S. Giovanni Evangelista.
CARLO, his nephew, (Florence 1825-1911), studied at the Academy of Fine Arts under Bezzuoli (v.). He was a good portrait painter, and for his subjects he drew inspiration from the most notable historical events of the Italian Risorgimento.
