AFFANI, IGNAZIO. - Painter, b. in Parma on 22 March 1828, d. in Fidenza on 29 July 1889. Trained at the school of Calegari, Pescatori and Scaramuzza at the local Academy of Fine Arts, he sought to complete his pictorial education through the study of the great sixteenth-century masters such as Titian and Correggio. In 1829 he moved to Florence, having won the pensionato with the painting Bramante che presenta Raffaello a Giulio II. He interpreted biblical and historical subjects with a romantic taste; the Girolamo Savonarola in carcere, preserved in the Gallery of Parma together with many other works, is considered his masterpiece; in the crypt of the Cathedral of the same city there remain the frescoes with stories from the life of St. Bernardino.
