AFFANI, IGNAZIO

AFFANI, IGNAZIO. — Painter, b. in Parma on 22 March 1828, d. in Fidenza on 29 July 1889. Trained in the school of Calegari, Pescatori, and Scaramuzza at the local Accademia di Belle Arti, he sought to complete his artistic education through the study of the great masters of the 16th century, such as Titian and Correggio. In 1829 he moved to Florence after winning a stipend with the painting *Bramante Introducing Raphael to Julius II*. He interpreted biblical and historical subjects with a romantic sensibility; *Girolamo Savonarola in Prison*, preserved in the Parma Gallery along with many other works, is considered his masterpiece; in the crypt of the city’s cathedral remain the frescoes depicting scenes from the life of St. Bernardino.
