CALEGARI, FAMIGLIA. — SANTO, engraver and sculptor, b. in Brescia in 1662, d. in 1717. He worked in Rome under the influence of Bernini and Algardi. A skilled and swift artist in wood and stucco, he left numerous works in the churches and palaces of Brescia.
Two sons followed in his footsteps: ALESSANDRO, who embellished Brescian gardens and patrician houses with his sculptures; ANTONIO (b. in 1698, d. in 1777), who decorated churches and palaces in Milan, Bologna, Cremona, Bergamo, Brescia, and Chiari. His work often attains indivi-
dual character despite the signs of an easy and conspicuous Mannerism due to a superficial pursuit of effect. He had three sons: LUCA, GIUSEPPE, and SANTO, likewise sculptors.
