ADHÉMAR (ADEMARO) DE MONTEIL, FAMILY. - A family originating from the Dauphiné and traceable back to the 8th century, it was distinguished by many ecclesiastical figures, among whom the following are noteworthy:

GUGLIELMO, bishop of Saint-Paul-Trois-Châteaux in 1482 and rector of the Comtat Venaissin in 1483, d. 1516.

FRANCESCO, bishop of Saint-Paul-Trois-Châteaux (1630), then archbishop of Arles (1643), b. at Grignan in 1603, d. at Arles in 1689. He was greatly beloved for his charity and apostolic zeal, and was a welcome friend to Louis XIV and Mazarin for his work in pacification and balanced governance during the Fronde. “Beautiful patriarch,” as his relative Mme de Sévigné called him.

GIACOMO, brother of the preceding, bishop of Saint-Paul-Trois-Châteaux (1643) and then of Uzès (1660), d. at Grignan in 1674, resided chiefly at court and expanded the family’s influence and patrimony.
