ADHÉMAR (ADEMARO) DE MONTEIL, FAMIGLIA. – Originating in the Delfinato and traceable back to the 8th century, it was rendered illustrious by many ecclesiastical figures, among whom are remembered:
ADEMARO, bishop of Le Puy (v.).
GUGLIELMO, bishop of Saint-Paul-Trois-Châteaux in 1482 and rector of the Contado Venassino in 1483, died in 1516.
FRANCESCO, bishop of Saint-Paul-Trois-Châteaux (1630), and subsequently archbishop of Arles (1643), born at Grignan in 1603, died at Arles in 1689. Extremely popular for his charity and apostolic zeal, he was a valued friend of Luigi XIV and Mazarino for his work of pacification and balanced administration during the Fronde. “Beau patriarche” was what his relative M.me de Sévigné called him.
GIACOMO, brother of the preceding, bishop of Saint-Paul-Trois-Châteaux (1643) and subsequently of Uzès (1660), died at Grignan in 1674; he resided chiefly at court and expanded the family’s influence and patrimony.
GIANBATTISTA FRANCESCO, nephew of the two preceding, archbishop of Arles, born in 1638, died at Montpellier in 1697; he succeeded his uncle Francesco in 1689 and is remembered as an able orator.
LUIGI GIUSEPPE, brother of the preceding, bishop of Carcassona, born in 1650, died in 1722; he succeeded in equalling his uncle Francesco in charity and apostolic zeal.
