ADHEMAR (Ademaro) de Monteil, Family. - Originating in the Dauphiné and dating back to the 8th century, it was made illustrious by many ecclesiastical figures, among whom the following are remembered:

ADEMARO, bishop of Le Puy (v.).

GUILLAUME, in 1482 bishop of Saint-Paul-Trois-Châteaux and in 1483 rector of the Comtat Venaissin, d. in 1516.

FRANÇOIS, bishop of Saint-Paul-Trois-Châteaux (1630), and then archbishop of Arles (1643), b. at Grignan in 1603, d. at Arles in 1689. Extremely popular for his charity and his apostolic zeal, he was a welcome friend to Louis XIV and to Mazarin for his work of pacification and balanced government during the Fronde. "Beau patriarche" his relative Mme de Sévigné called him.

JACQUES, brother of the preceding, bishop of Saint-Paul-Trois-Châteaux (1643) and then of Uzès (1660), d. at Grignan in 1674, resided above all at court and enlarged the influence and the patrimony of the family.

JEAN-BAPTISTE FRANÇOIS, nephew of the two preceding, archbishop of Arles, b. in 1638, d. at Montpellier in 1697, succeeded his uncle François in 1689 and is remembered as a valiant orator.

LOUIS JOSEPH, brother of the preceding, bishop of Carcassonne, b. in 1650, d. in 1722, knew how to equal his uncle François in charity and in apostolic zeal.
