AGNESI, ASTORGIO. – Cardinal, born in Naples in 1391, died in Rome on 10 Oct. 1451; he is buried in the cloister of S. Maria sopra Minerva. Bishop of Mileto (1411) and subsequently of Ravello (1413), of Melfi (1418), and of Ancona (1419), he refused the see of Ascoli on 26 Aug. 1422. It was on this occasion that Martin V established that, if a bishop refused a see offered to him, the rule should be followed of assigning it to the prelate designated to succeed him in the first see. In 1426 he took the title of Papal Commissioner and General Treasurer of the Marca d’Ancona and other places. In 1435 he was appointed governor of the Romagna. In 1436 he was given the archbishopric of Benevento, whence he received the appellation Beneventanus. In 1448 he was created cardinal with the title of S. Eusebio. Camerlengo of the Sacred College from 27 Oct. 1449, he held this office for one year.
