AGNESI, ASTORGIO. - Cardinal, b. at Napoli in 1391, d. at Roma on 10 Oct. 1451; he is buried in the cloister of S. Maria sopra Minerva. Bishop of Mileto (1411) and subsequently of Ravello (1413), Melfi (1418), and Ancona (1419), he refused the see of Ascoli on 26 Aug. 1422. It was on this occasion that Martino V established that, should a bishop refuse a see offered to him, the rule should be followed of giving it to the prelate appointed to succeed him in his first see. In 1426 he assumed the title of Pontifical Commissioner and General Treasurer of the Marca d'Ancona and other places. In 1435 he was appointed governor of the Romagne. In 1436 he was granted the archbishopric of Benevento, whence he received the appellation Beneventanus. In 1448 he was appointed cardinal with the title of S. Eusebio. Camerlengo of the Sacro Cuore from 27 Oct. 1449, he held this office for one year.
