Also known as: Latin: Augustinus Aveldensis

AUGUSTINE OF ALFELD (Aveldensis). - German Franciscan controversialist, b. at Alfeld (Hanover) in the second half of the 15th century and d. after the year 1532. He held the office of lector in Sacred Scripture (Leipzig 1520), of guardian (Halle 1523), of provincial (1529).

He was among the very first to rise up against nascent Protestantism. In 1520, on a commission received from Adolph, bishop of Merseburg, he began the publication of a series of pamphlets: Super apostolica Sede (Leipzig 1520); Malagma optimum (Leipzig 1520); Confessio Aveldiana (Leipzig 1530), etc., which stirred Luther's vindictive wrath to the point of frenzy and which reveal in A. a profound theologian, versed in Sacred Scripture.
