Alberti, Domenico

ALBERTI, DOMENICO. - Composer, b. in 1710 in Venice, d. there in 1740. Of a noble family, he cultivated music not professionally; a pupil of the priest

Antonio Biffi and of Antonio Lotti, he was a harpsichordist and a highly acclaimed singer. He composed motets and stage works (Endimione, 1737, and Galatea and Olimpiade, c. 1737-1740). His name is particularly entrusted to the elegant Sonatas for harpsichord (8 published by Walsh in London, others in manuscript at the British Museum) and to the procedure that took its name precisely from him, that of the "Alberti bass," although recent criticism ascribes it to F. M. Maichelbeck, consisting of a harpsichord accompaniment figuration in broken chords.
