Alboin, King of the Lombards

ALBOINO, RE DEI LONGOBARDI

ALBOIN, King of the Lombards. - Elected in 565, he defeated the Gepids and killed their king Cunimund, whose daughter Rosamund he then married. In 568 he began the conquest of Italy, at the head not only of his own people but also of numerous Saxons and, it seems, of Gepids, Sarmatians, Pannonians, Suebi and Noricans. In 569 he occupied Milan; in 572 he took Pavia after a three-year siege (569-72) and chose it from then on as the capital of the new kingdom. Meanwhile his men pushed as far as the southern border of Tuscia. He died at Verona on 28 June 572, the victim of a conspiracy led by his wife Rosamund.
