Albret, Amanhit d'

ALBRET, AMANHIT d'. - Cardinal, b. in France, d. at Casteljaloux, near Bazas, between June and Dec. of the year 1520. Brother of Charlotte, wife of Cesare Borgia, he was the first abbot of the monastery of St. Ruffo, in the diocese of Valencia, then, in 1500, he was created by Alexander VI cardinal of St. Nicholas in Carcere and in 1507 archbishop of Pamplona. In 1502 he was named administrator of the church of Oleron and two years later he obtained from Julius II the bishopric of Comminges; but Julius II stripped him of his benefices because he adhered to the Council of Pisa. He nevertheless managed to obtain pardon from Leo X, notoriously lenient in such matters. Subsequently the governments of the churches of Condom and of Lescar were also entrusted to him. He was a man greedy for honors and pleasures.
