ALEXANDER, JOSEPH ADDISON. - Third son of Alexander Archibald (v.), Presbyterian exegete, b. in Philadelphia in 1809, d. at Princeton in 1860. From 1838 he taught Oriental languages and literatures at Princeton, rising to fame as America's foremost linguist; from 1852 he taught ecclesiastical history, and from 1858 New Testament exegesis.

Drawing inspiration from the conservative current of Hengstenberg, he composed learned philological works, among them Isaiah (2 vols., New York 1846-47; new ed. Glasgow 1875), but above all various extensive popular commentaries (such as The Psalms, 3 vols., New York 1850; The Acts of the Apostles, 2 vols., 2nd ed. London 1862). To spread knowledge of the sacred books, he planned with Ch. Hodge a series of popular commentaries on the New Testament; he was able to publish only Mark with the Acts of the Apostles (1858), and Matthew (1860).
