Also known as: Spanish: Alfonso II el Casto, Alfonso II de Asturias; French: Alphonse II des Asturies; Latin: Adefonsus II

ALFONSO II, King of Asturias and León, called the Chaste. - B. in 759, d. in 842; son of Fruela, he fought successfully against the Moors, reaching, in most daring raids, as far as the walls of Lisbon. Memorable was his activity with Charlemagne and with the latter's son Louis of Aquitaine, who had conquered and fortified the "Marca Hispania." During his reign occurred the discovery of the tomb of the apostle St. James, for whom he built the church of Iria, later called Compostella (v.).
